II-A. ISAAC LASSETER SIBERT (1826– 1913), son of George Sibert2 (John David1)
Isaac Lasseter Sibert was born on 12 November 1826 in South Carolina. [1][2] He died on 12 or 13 May 1913 in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia. [1][2][3] He married Sarah ("Sallie") Patterson Lyon on 16 December 1856. [1][4] Sarah was the daughter of Thomas J. and Margaret Carson (Wideman) Lyon. She was born on 16 April 1835 in South Carolina. [1][2][5] She died on 7 February 1911. [1][5] Isaac and Sarah are buried in the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Valdosta. [2] Their gravestones say: [2]
Isaac Lasseter Seibert 1826 – 1913
Sarah P. Wife of I.L. Seibert born [unreadable]6, 183[unreadable] died Feb. 7, 1911.
In Margaret Lyon vs. Isaac L. Sibert and wife, Laura Lyon, and others, the court granted Margaret Lyon a partition of the lands of her deceased husband, Thomas J. Lyon. Pursuant to this, Margaret announced his real estate—amounting to about 850 acres and known as Indian Hill—would be auctioned on 3 October 1859. [6]
According to the census, in 1860, Isaac, aged 28, and Sarah P., aged 22, were living in Dorns Gold Mine, Abbeville County, South Carolina with their apparent daughter Ida A., aged two. Isaac was a farmer with a personal estate worth 6,300 dollars and real estate worth 6,300 dollars. [5]
Isaac (referred to as "J.L.") enlisted as a private in Company A of the First South Carolina Cavalry on 23 May 1863 from Abbeville for "three years or the War". In September and October 1863, he was absent, having been sent to South Carolina for a horse. At the end of the year, it was noted that he had been absent without leave but had since returned with a satisfactory excuse. On 26 February 1864, he was detailed at Brigade 2, and on 25 April 1864, he was sent "on horse detail." He returned by June 1864. [7]
Isaac suffered financially after the war and was declared bankrupt. An assignee advertised an auction of his estate at his property in Abbeville to be held on 27 November 1868. It included about 300 acres of land, an old buggy, an ox cart and ox, books and a bookcase, sheep, hogs, cattle, and household furnishings. [8]
The court cases of Isaac Sibert vs. William Lyon, Isaac vs. L.W. Lyon, and Isaac vs. George Sibert and wife were heard on 30 November 1869. [DP] On 3 January 1872, the South Carolina Supreme Court struck off Isaac L. Sibert as the administrator of the estates of William Lyon, Leonard W. Lyon, and George Sibert and his wife. [9]
According to the census, in 1870, I.L., aged 38, and L.P., aged 32, lived in Indian Hill, Abbeville County, with their children I.B., aged 12; J.L., aged nine; J.A., aged four, and M.E., born in October 1869. The enumerator, or the person he spoke with, was confused about the initials and the handwriting is hard to read. The household was born in South Carolina. Isaac was a farmer with real estate worth 400 or 600 dollars. [5]
In 1880, Isaac, aged 48, and Sallie, aged 43, lived in Cokesbury, Abbeville County with their children Ida, aged 22; John, aged 19; George, aged 14; and Arthur, aged seven. They were all born in South Carolina. Isaac was a farmer. [5]
In 1900, Isaac, born in November 1831, and Sarah, born in April 1837, lived in Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia with their son George and his family. Isaac was a farmer. [5]
On 31 August 1907, Isaac applied for a Confederate soldier's Indigent Pension. He said he was born in 1831 in Abbeville. He lived in Quitman and had been a resident of Georgia for about 12 years. He had enlisted in Company A of the First South Carolina Regiment in 1863 and served for two years. He said he was with his company when it surrendered. He applied on the grounds of age and poverty. He had been unable to work for ten years; he owned no property and was supported by his son. His application was rejected on 4 October 1907 because he had served from South Carolina and was not a bona fide resident of Georgia on 1 January 1894. [10]
Isaac moved from Quitman to Valdosta with his son George several years before his death. He suffered a paralytic stroke and was a complete invalid. [3]
In 1910, Isaac, aged 78, and Sally P., aged 73, lived in Valdosta with their son George and his family. Isaac was a Civil War veteran. He and Sally had been married for 53 years. Sally had had five children, and three were living. [5]
Isaac's obituary says he was survived by his son George, his daughter, Mrs. John McArthur, and his son, Mr. Arthur Seibert. [3]
